Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in the Bon Voyage 10 Piece Pots Set with Bakelite Handles?

5 graduated heavy aluminium casseroles in 5 sizes with 5 matching lids — 10 pieces total. The pot bodies are 99.9% pure aluminium with reinforced black bakelite side handles. This is the traditional Bon Voyage 10pc set design that has been in South African kitchens since 1977.

What is the difference between the NW7 (bakelite handles) and the Queen 10pc (SS handles)?

The NW7 has riveted black bakelite (heat-resistant plastic) handles — warmer to touch in use, traditional look, lower cost. The Queen 10pc has stainless steel side handles — cooler-touch in use, modern look, longer lasting. The pot bodies, sizes, and aluminium specification are otherwise identical — the choice is handle preference and budget.

Is the NW7 good for cooking pap?

Yes — the thick aluminium body distributes heat evenly across the entire pot, preventing the hot spots that cause pap to burn at the bottom. Use medium-low heat, add maize meal with the South African “cutting” motion (not vigorous stirring), and cover with the lid for a 20-minute low simmer. See our aluminium cooking guide for the full technique.

How does the NW7 compare to Hart cookware?

Both Bon Voyage NW7 and Hart’s comparable 10-piece sets target the household market. Bon Voyage uses heavier-gauge aluminium intended for daily cooking of pap, stews, and family meals. Bon Voyage 10pc Aluminium Set sits at 4.8★ across 636 reviews on Takealot. For a full side-by-side, see Bon Voyage vs Hart Pots — an honest comparison.

Are bakelite handles safe?

Yes. Bakelite is a heat-resistant thermosetting plastic used in cookware handles since the 1920s. It stays cool to touch during stovetop use, will not melt at normal cooking temperatures, and is food-safe. Avoid sustained direct contact with an open flame or an electric coil element. Bakelite handles are not oven-safe above ~160 °C — do not put bakelite-handled pots in a hot oven for extended periods.

What stovetops is the NW7 compatible with?

Gas, electric coil, ceramic, and halogen. Not induction-compatible (aluminium is non-magnetic). For induction stoves see the stainless steel Diamond 28pc or S27 27pc ranges.

How do I clean and care for the NW7?

Hand wash with warm soapy water and a non-abrasive sponge. Dishwasher safe but hand washing preserves the surface finish longer. Do not put the bakelite handles in a hot oven. To remove the dark grey film that develops on aluminium over time, simmer water with one tablespoon of cream of tartar for 10 minutes. Do not use steel wool or harsh abrasive cleaners.

Where is the NW7 manufactured?

At the Big5 Cookware factory in Thaba Nchu, Free State, South Africa. Big5 Cookware has been manufacturing cookware at this facility since 1977, producing over one million pieces per year.
