POT LOOKS NICE AND WORKS WELL JUST TOO HEAVY ESPECIALLY THE LID.
Enamelware = vitreous enamel (essentially powdered glass) fused at high temperature onto a steel base. The result: a hard, food-safe, non-reactive surface that doesn't rust like bare steel and doesn't crack like ceramic at normal use temperatures.
Enamel is the South African camping/braai/canteen tradition. Lighter than ceramic. More heat-tolerant than plastic. Looks better than melamine. Lasts decades if you don't drop it.
| Use Case | Why Enamel Wins |
|---|---|
| Outdoor / camping / braai | Won't shatter like ceramic on a wobbly camping table |
| Coffee / rooibos mugs | Holds heat, classic SA aesthetic |
| Mealie meal / pap plates for big families | Stack-able, lightweight, scratch-resistant |
| Wash basins / utility | Won't rust like bare steel; food-safe glass coating |
| Caterers, lodges, hostels | Cheap to replace, dishwasher-safe |

See our deep dive: Enamel vs Stainless Steel Tableware — covers when each material is the better choice.
Is enamelware safe to use? Yes. Vitreous enamel is glass fused to steel — food-safe, non-reactive, no leaching. Watch only for chips on the cooking surface; if exposed to bare steel, replace.
Can enamelware go in the dishwasher? Yes for most SA enamelware. Avoid abrasive scouring pads which scratch the glaze.
Can enamel mugs go on the gas stove? Yes (lightly) — enamel handles direct heat. Don't put empty enamel on high heat for extended time.
Where can I buy enamelware in South Africa wholesale? Big5 manufactures and supplies wholesale direct from the Thaba Nchu factory. See our Factory Shop / Wholesale page for B2B.
Why is some enamel cheaper than others? Steel gauge, single vs double coating, edge finish, and country of manufacture. Cheap imported enamel chips within months; quality SA-made enamel lasts decades.
