Bon Voyage No. 1/2 Potjie Pot — R419 — 1.2L Cast Iron | Big5 Cookware
Bon Voyage No. 1/2 Potjie Pot — R419 — South Africa's Smallest Practical Potjie Size
What is a No. 1/2 Potjie?
The Bon Voyage No. 1/2 cast iron potjie pot is the second-smallest size in the standard South African potjie range. At 1.2 litres capacity it serves 2 people comfortably, making it the right size for couples, single-person braai weekends, B&Bs serving individual portions, and gift-giving.
It's heavy enough to hold heat like a full-size potjie, but small enough to carry one-handed and store inside a kitchen cupboard. The 3-leg design works on hot coals (the original intent), on a gas burner with a heat diffuser, or over a wood fire at a camp.

What to Cook in a No. 1/2 Potjie
- Sunday two-person curry — chicken, lamb, or beef. Layer protein at the bottom, vegetables on top, low heat for 90 minutes.
- Samp & bean for two — slow-cook overnight on the lowest setting.
- Single-pot rice and stew — biryani-style with the rice layered on top of marinated protein.
- Side dish at a larger braai — pap with mushroom sauce, or a bean / samp side for 4-6 people sharing.
- Hostel / B&B individual portions — one pot per guest for breakfast oats, lunch stew, or dinner curry.
Bon Voyage No. 1/2 vs LK's Best Duty Small Potjie
The South African cast iron market is dominated by LK Products (Best Duty + CHEF Supreme brands), Megamaster, and Campmaster — all positioned through retail channels (Builders, Game, Outdoor Warehouse, Takealot). They're solid pots. The trade-off you make for retail availability is the retail markup.
The Bon Voyage No. 1/2 is the same cast iron, the same 3-leg design, made at the Big5 Cookware factory in Thaba Nchu. Factory-direct shipping means no middleman markup.
Care & Seasoning
- Wash with hot water (no soap) and dry completely.
- Rub a thin layer of vegetable oil over the entire interior surface.
- Heat over low coals or in a 200°C oven for 1 hour.
- Let cool inside the heat source. Repeat once.
- Going forward: rinse with hot water, never use soap, never put in the dishwasher.
