Frequently Asked Questions
What is included in the 6 Piece Pots Set?
3 graduated heavy aluminium pots with 3 matching lids — 6 pieces total. Sizes are 17.5 cm, 20 cm, and 22.5 cm in diameter. This is the smaller alternative to the full 10pc range, suitable for households where the larger sizes (24 cm+) are not needed.
What is the difference between the 6pc set (NW3) and the 10pc set (NW7)?
The 6pc set has 3 sizes (17.5 / 20 / 22.5 cm) + 3 lids; the 10pc set (NW7) has 5 sizes covering smaller and larger pots, + 5 lids. The 6pc set is for smaller households (1–4 people); the 10pc set is for larger families (4–8 people) or households that want a wider size range for everything from sauces up to large stews.
How many people does each pot in the 6pc set feed?
As a rough guide for stews, curry, or rice: the 17.5 cm pot feeds 2–3 people, the 20 cm pot feeds 3–5 people, and the 22.5 cm pot feeds 5–8 people. For pap (rough single-meal portions): 17.5 cm ≈ 4–6, 20 cm ≈ 6–8, 22.5 cm ≈ 8–12.
Is the 6pc set good for cooking pap?
Yes — same thick aluminium body as the larger sets. Use medium-low heat, the South African cutting motion when adding maize meal, cover with the lid for a 20-minute low simmer. See our aluminium cooking guide.
Are bakelite handles safe?
Yes. Bakelite is a heat-resistant thermosetting plastic that stays cool to touch during normal stovetop use and is food-safe. Avoid sustained direct contact with an open flame. Bakelite handles are not oven-safe above ~160 °C.
Is it safe to cook with aluminium pots?
Yes. EFSA’s Tolerable Weekly Intake for aluminium is 1 mg per kg of body weight — typical cooking stays well below this. The Alzheimer’s link is a myth from a 1965 rabbit study that has since been disproven.
What stovetops is the 6pc set compatible with?
Gas, electric coil, ceramic, and halogen. Not induction-compatible (aluminium is non-magnetic). For induction see the stainless steel Diamond 28pc or S27 27pc.
Where is the 6pc set manufactured?
At the Big5 Cookware factory in Thaba Nchu, Free State, South Africa. Manufactured at this facility since 1977.
