TL;DR
A standard SA pap portion is 150–200g raw maize meal per person, expanding ~3× cooked. Add 30% headroom for stirring + steam. Use the table below to map pot size to people fed.
The Math
Cooked pap volume ≈ 3× raw meal weight (in mL). Add 30% headroom → divide raw weight × 3.9 to get minimum pot litres.
For 8 people: 8 × 175g = 1,400g raw → 1,400 × 3.9 = 5.46 L → round up to 6–7 L pot.

Catering Tips
For funeral / wedding catering (common SA use case), order one size up from your math. For a "promised 50 servings", buy a 35 L pot rather than 21 L. For leftover storage, factor in cooling — pap firms up significantly.
