Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Soup Plate used for?
Used across South Africa for soup, stew, pap, samp, curry, breyani, and family-style serving. The deeper rim (vs the flat dinner plate or rice plate) is designed to hold liquid foods without spilling. Also used for camping, outdoor catering, and traditional family-style serving.
What is New World Enamel made of?
Vitreous (glass) enamel coated on a steel core. Double-coated for durability. The glass coating is non-reactive, food-safe, and easy to clean. The steel core makes the plates oven safe but means they cannot be microwaved.
Is the Soup Plate oven safe?
Yes — oven safe up to 200 °C. Suitable for baking, reheating, and oven-to-table serving. Avoid sudden temperature changes to prevent thermal shock.
Is the Soup Plate dishwasher safe?
Yes — dishwasher safe. Hand washing with a soft sponge preserves the enamel finish longer.
What is the difference between the Soup Plate and the Rice Plate?
Both are deep enamel plates. The Soup Plate (22/24/26 cm) has a slightly deeper rim than the Rice Plate (20/22/24/26 cm), making it better for holding liquid soups and stews without spilling. The Rice Plate is shallower and works better for rice, pap, and dry main dishes. Most South African households own both.
Why does my enamel plate have small black spots or imperfections?
New World Enamel products are individually handmade and kiln-fired. Small black spots, minor surface scratches, and slight pattern misalignment are normal characteristics of the handmade firing process and do not affect use, safety, or longevity.
Where is the New World Enamel Soup Plate manufactured?
At the Big5 Cookware factory in Thaba Nchu, Free State, South Africa. Manufactured at this facility since 1977.
